Field Notes: Pastor Kelvin, the director of this project, was tragically killed in a car accident in December 2011. He left an incredible impact on not only the village, but the country as well. We were blessed to have been able to work with him for the time that we did. The following March, leadership has been passed over to Pastor David and the programs continue to run under his leadership.

Kakombo village is located 80 miles east of the city of Lusaka. Population of the greater district is approximately 25,000. Sickness & death from HIV/AIDS and malaria is high, leaving children orphaned and vulnerable. Families live a subsistence lifestyle, growing crops for their own consumption only. Seasonal hunger and starvation occurs when harvests are low due to drought or flood damage.

Country Notes: Zambia is in Southern Africa and has a population of ~10 million people with 9 language or tribal groups. It is mostly a tropical region with high rainfall, prone to flooding. 56% of the population lives in rural villages, where most are unemployed and live off subsistence farming. Zambia is experiencing a HIV/AIDS epidemic, with a HIV prevalence rate of 17 percent among adults between 15 to 49.

We had a Christmas party for all the children, and it was awesome! We had poems from the children, memorized scriptures, and some drama. It was a come-together family meeting, and these children are so sharp. We will send you photos of the whole event. God bless you all for your support!

We have been given land by Senior Chief Shakumbila to cultivate food for the orphans. This has been an answered prayer to us, as we have been praying for the land so that we can start establish projects that will benefit the youths and the aged in the community. And we want to cultivate starting this year.

The introduction of the organic gardens has brought a lot of change in the diet of the children. The centers no longer need to buy vegetables, because they produce enough for the children and some to sell. The organic gardens has brought a lot of hope in the communities because now they can come and buy the healthy vegetables from the centers.

After we had changed the diet, the children's health improved and most of them gained weight. Not only that, but even their CD4 count increased. 70 percent of these children are HIV positive.
