THE NORTH WEST

Mahikeng, the capital of the North West province, is a small city surrounded by multiple rural villages. This is where our organization began over 25 years ago. Village life still exists where life is all about community. The pace of life is slow and steady, and relationships are very important. Spend time serving in villages, partnering with our church programs and pastors.

MAHIKENG & THE NORTH WEST

Life in the North West province is simple and slow. The more rural areas can have difficulty feeding their families, finding quality education, and getting the care they need when they are sick. Seeing the conditions of a rural village may first be a little shocking to you, but walking through and seeing the abundance of smiles and laughter and families helps you see the strong sense of community in the slower-paced village lifestyle.

LIFE IN THE NORTH WEST

A critical component to a successful Journey is having a safe, relaxing oasis where you can decompress from all that you experience each day and bond with your teammates. Orchard: Africa’s 18-bed guesthouse is just that. With Western amenities, and clean, comfortable living spaces, you’ll feel immersed in the Mahikeng culture, yet perfectly at home.

THE WESTERN CAPE

The Western Cape province is a place of great contrast. Cape Town and Khayelitsha are located on the southern point of the African continent. Cape Town sits at the base of the natural wonder of the world, Table Mountain. It is modern, wealthy, and home to over 3 million residents. Surrounding Cape Town, located just a short drive down the road, is Khayelitsha, an underdeveloped informal township, that is full of life and activity—but a place where families face the everyday challenges of extreme poverty.

CAPE TOWN & KHAYELITSHA

LIFE IN KHAYELITSHA

Khayelitsha encompasses the largest and fastest growing informal township in South Africa. Due to overcrowding multiple families often occupy a one room tin shack. Hunger is also a daily challenge, as unemployment and a terrain ill-suited for agriculture leaves many parents unable to feed their families. The most vulnerable are the women and children. In and around Khayelitsha is where a large portion of Orchard: Africa’s work lies in the Western Cape, and it is here that you’ll find amazing hope amidst great hardship.

While serving in South Africa you will stay at the Orchard: Africa mission house - a safe place to decompress, share meals with your teammates and reflect on the experiences you have had in Africa. Our guesthouse is located in Somerset West and is the home away from home you’ll need. You will find comfortable beds, showers and beautiful mountain views.
